Biblical Hebrew uses dots and dashes (nikkud) below and above consonants to indicate vowels.
Six letters (Bet, Gimel, Dalet, Kaf, Pe, Tav) have both hard and soft pronunciations. A dot (dagesh) inside indicates the hard sound.
